In order to assure the safety of the VHTR/GFR a very good understanding of the behaviour of the materials (static and dynamic) is required over the entire scale range from atomic, through micro-structure, to large scale structures. Internationally, effective modelling across all these scales is required, including neutronics, microscopic behaviour, macroscopic behaviour, thermal-hydraulics, and structural behaviour, including environmental compatibility. This will require state-of the art computer codes and modelling, and the most advanced computing platforms and algorithms. Within the research in WP 2, the OU will review international work, identify gaps in knowledge and select one ceramic and one steel for specific study to complement other work within the UK. This will use the temperature and neutron fluence data from (i) and (ii) above.
