A PhD student will exploit the database for validation of advanced RANS models (see Workpackage 1), then focus on optimising fuel/coolant exchanges for novel VHTR-GFR (gas-cooled) ceramic-prismatic cells in future reactor designs. CFD allows to economically explore a variety of innovative designs, such as spiral ribs, or twisted hexagonal rods with the objectives of increasing heat transfer and core homogeneity while avoiding extra head losses, hydrodynamic forces and vibrations, deposition and erosion, this via innovative channel geometries defined with stakeholders.
